Dining in TO - Ferrovia

Fairly new and quite ambient, Ferrovia is an impressive Italian dining restaurant located in the ever expanding North East Markham area. Located right at the corner of Markham Road and 14th Avenue, Ferrovia is close to the 407 and is part of the long shopping and eating Markham Road corridor noth of Steeles.

What impressed me the most about Ferrovia was the service. The greeting host, waiter and manager were all pleasant and courtesous, despite the early evening rush. I was graciously shown the bathroom prior to dinner and my glass of cool water was refilled without so much as the slightest hesitation from my waiter.

The restarant itself had a cocktail area, several large comfortable booths and table seating. Lots of rich hardwood floors and oak and maple furnishings gave the restaurant a warm feel. The 16 foot high ceilings made the restaurant feel airy and grand.

For dinner that night, my guest and I started with a three layer bruschetta which had both authenticism and modern flare. The freshly chopped seasoned tomatoes and flat bread were fairly standard, but the goat cheese and portabello mushrooms split into quadrants of the circular pizza-style bruschetta, made it a bit more out of the ordinary. In addition the freshly baked bread was warm and soft with ample EVOO and balsamic vinegar to season.

Just as enjoyable was my main course which consisted of a pan seared salmon steak served over mixed greens. It was an exotic crusty seasoning on the salmon that added distinct flavour. There were traditional Italian trademarks like oregano and olive oil, but combined with cilantro and other unconventional spices for a great taste. The texture of the salmon was just right with it practically melting in your mouth!

The pizza that my dinner guest had was on the more standard side and she said that it didn't impress her much. Topped with Italian sausage, mozzarella and mushrooms, the pizza was cooked in the "thin crust" style and came to the table fresh and piping hot.

Topping off the dinner was a great cappucino to warm me up a bit and send me on my way!

Ferrovia surpasses anything else in the immediate area for a nice night out. There are many "quick bite" restaurants within the same 1 kilometre radius, but if you're planning on a nice evening to enjoy good food in a slightly more upscale atmosphere, then I say go to Ferrovia. You won't be disappointed!
